Applying Play Therapy Tools in the Treatment of Trauma in Children

Overview:

This workshop provides an overview of treatment for traumatized children and adolescents. It includes a review of the various types of play that traumatized children engage in and stages of trauma therapy. It will emphasize the role titrated exposure; one of the essential elements of trauma therapy. It will highlight evidence-based models such trauma-focused cognitive behaviour therapy (Cohen, Mannarino & Deblinger) for simple trauma and childhood traumatic grief, the Attachment, Self-Regulation and Competency model (Blaustein & Kinnibergh) for complex trauma and how they can be adapted to play therapy. Other emerging models that have a developing evidence base will also be explored based on the interests of participants.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Formulate a trauma-specific treatment plan based on the client’s clinical presentation, predisposing, precipitating, perpetuating and protective factors trauma based clinical presentations determined through interviews and play.
  2. To apply titrated exposure as one of the essential components in trauma-specific treatment utilizing Briere’s Therapeutic Window for calibrating exposures.
  3. To implement trans-theoretical interventions for sleep problems, hyperarousal, reexperiencing and dissociation.
  4. To identify evidence based/evidence informed trauma-specific therapy models such as Trauma Focused Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, ARC, SMART/sensorimotor therapy, concurrent treatment for PTSD & Substance abuse (Seeking Safety) Reactive Avoidance Model best suited for their clinical population.
